This thesis focuses on the analysis and modeling of scratching, in other words, the DJ (disk jockey) practice of using the turntable as a musical instrument. There has been experimental use of turntables as musical instruments since their invention, but the use is now mainly ascribed to the musical genre hip-hop and the playing style known as scratching.

B-boying is a form of Afro-diasporic competitive dance that developed in the Bronx in the early 1970s. Widely-though incorrectly-known as "breakdancing," it is often dismissed as urba acrobatics set to music. In reality, b-boying is a deeply traditional and profoundly expressive art form that has been passed down from teacher to student for almost four decades.

In the three decades since Kool Herc first put the same record on two side-by-side turntables, DJs have moved out of city parks, house and block parties, and the darkened booths of nightclubs, and onto center stage, performing before admiring crowds of thousands.  They have not only given rise to hip-hop and house-DJs have influenced fashion, film, TV, and more.
