Intro. to Hiphop Academia
Posting by Josef Sorett
This reference guide is the result of four months of Internet research conducted on courses being taught on Hiphop at the college and university level. Courses have been categorized into those focused completely on Hiphop (Courses Focusing on Hiphop), and those which pay significant attention to Hiphop as part of the course (Hiphop Inclusive Courses). Check following issues of THAT for a more comprehensive listing of courses being taught using Hiphop for grades K-12.
More information regarding these course listings can be found at the Hiphop Archive website, http://hiphoparchive.org/hiphopu/courses/. In the pages following the course listings, which include the course title, the professor, and the hosting institution, there are more detailed accounts of courses. These entries provide a course description, a syllabus (when available), and in most cases the URL at which the course information was found. After the initial internet research was conducted, follow-up phone calls were made to departments, professors, and administrators in order to find out more specific course details that were not present on the World Wide Web (e.g., when the course was taught, how many times, etc.). We are indebted to the faculty and staff who were helpful in supplying this information. If, however, you discover details that are inaccurate or outdated, or if you know of a Hiphop course that did not make our list, please email us at updates@hiphoparchive.org.
