DC in the House
Posting by Cheryl Fischer

One of the most interesting presentations at the 2002 Congressional Black Caucus Foundation's Annual Legislative Conference was "The Economics of Hip-Hop Culture" presented by Rep. Cynthia McKinney (GA-4) on Thursday, September 12 from 12:00 to 3:00 PM. Participants were Talib Karim, Esq., Chairman, Black Entertainment and Telecommunications Association (BETA); Timothy Jones, Director, Teen Program, Martha's Table and Hip Hop Educator & Consultant; Cedric Muhammad, President, The Black Electorate; Olivia Fox, former co-host of The Russ Parr Morning Show; Daniel Blackman, Chairman, Economic Empowerment Initiative, National Youth Connection, Inc.; Stephen Hill, Vice-President for Music Programming and Talent, BET; and Rep. Cynthia McKinney.

The speakers focused on three main areas: The Power of the Ballot; Empowering the Hip Hop Community; and Following the Money and Economic Impact of Hip Hop. They actively elicited ideas and suggestions from the audience about strategies to involve young people in civic participation, such as voting and fund-raising for progressive elected officials. All agreed that much work must be done on the local and national levels to fully utilize Hip Hop's broad range of possibilities in creating a better African America. For more information about the presentation, contact the Office of Rep. Cynthia McKinney at www.house.gov/McKinney or 124 Cannon Building, Washington, D.C., 20515; Tel: 202-225-1605; Fax: 202-226-0691.
