Abstract/Synopsis: German rap music has its roots in popular Afro-American rap and its establishment in the youth culture of hip-hop. This genre is transferred in various ways by German rappers.
The author analyses German-language rap groups and their popular artefacts, focusing on three outstanding examples, Die Fantastischen Vier, Sabrina Setlur and Aziza A, on the basis of their aesthetic character and their relationships with other musical and media genres. The study begins with an explanation of its methods, followed by an outline of the history and character of American rap and the history of its reception in Germany. This approach, taking account of specific aesthetic and cultural aspects, enables the author to describe a spectrum of cultural transfers, stylistic forms and images of rappers and thus to illustrate the full cultural potential of the popular phenomenon of German-language rap.
